Question: Suspension by the church, for immorality

I just answered this question. I think it’s worth sharing

Suspension by the church, for immorality

recently i worshipped in a church wer a lady was suspended for immorality and she was given d Back seat. is it right to place suspension on members for their wrongs?

My response:

It depends on the person involved. Let me explain.

Jesus forgives, we preach forgiveness, we teach that love covers a multitude of sins, and we preach grace. Therefore, the church must, and should practice what it teaches. Suspension is not necessary, per say, just because a person was caught the first time. She should have been shown mercy, just as God did immediately when she confessed her sin, and then she should have been corrected with love.

Suspension might become necessary when a person is not showing remorse, and when sin becomes a habit.

In 1 Corinthians 5, there was a man in church who was sleeping with his father’s wife. Paul accused the church of being proud and arrogant. He said that they should have handed him over to the devil for the destruction of his flesh. Neither the brother nor the church showed any signs of remorse. Discipline became necessary. The Bible says that God disciplines those He loves. Discipline doesn’t mean hatred, and it should not be done wrongly. It should be done as an act of love.

ok, but I’ve never been in support of suspension in church. i belive like u said counselling. Jesus did not despise d adulterous woman, who was caught in d very act,we as Christians should follow.

My response:

Yes, but don’t forget that we are new creatures, unlike that woman. There are things that we should not do because of our new nature.

Like I said, suspension is necessary when counselling didn’t yield any result.

what if d person in question leaves to another church?

My response:

The Body of Christ is one. Leaving that particular church doesn’t make the person free because the suspension was done in the name of Christ and with His authority. It is also a sign of pride and arrogance. Better to stay and endure the punishment. It is for the person’s benefit.

so suspension is a necessity when d need arises?

My response:

Let me answer with two verses

Those who sin should be reprimanded in front of the whole church; this will serve as a strong warning to others.
1 Timothy 5:20 NLT

An open rebuke is better than hidden love! Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy.
Proverbs 27:5‭-‬6 NLT
