Bible Study: Freedom From Sin
Date: Wednesday, 28 June 2017
Romans 6:22; John 8:34-36
We have learnt in the last two weeks that
1) sin is from the word, hamartia, which means, failure; being in error; and missing the mark;
2) that there are basically two classifications of sin: the sinful nature and then sinful deeds/works/actions, and
3) that there are consequences for sin.
Having said all that, it’s important for us to know and understand that sin has been dealt with in Christ. That’s what we are learning today; that there’s freedom from sin.
God’s salvation plan includes: the restoration of man to Himself, deliverance of man from the bondage of Satan, and to set man free from sin. 1 John 3:8b
Until a person is living free from sin he is still in bondage and at risk, because sin opens the door to the devil and to the other effects of sin. Ephesians 4:27, 2 Corinthians 2:11
When a man/woman is born again, he is set free from sin (Romans 6:7, 11, 22). Sin has no power over a person who is saved (Romans 6:14).
But we have a responsibility to stay free of sin. This is the part many of us do not understand, or acknowledge. There will be urges and desires to sin, but it’s our duty not to yield to those sinful desires. Romans 6:12-13.
Jesus set us free from sin, and we continue to enjoy freedom from sin by:
A) The grace of God (Titus 2:11-14)
B) Walking in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16-25)
C) Being obedient children (1 Peter 1:14-16)
